Nikki Downie Is Promoted to Associate Advisor

Nikki has had her hands in helping Cove for the past 10 years, but she committed full-time with the company a year and a half ago when she started providing assistance to Cove’s senior underwriting team and administrative assistance and customer service to Cove clients. Now, she has been promoted to Associate Advisor where she’s fully invested in providing insurance products that best suits her clients’ needs. We’ve sat down with her to hear more about her new role.

First off, congrats on the promotion! How does it feel?

It feels amazing! I am so honoured to be continuing my journey at a company that not only has a deep care for their clients but for the environment as well. I’m excited to see where my career takes me!

Tell us about your progression at Cove.

I have been working on and off for Cove for probably the last 10 years, but about 2 years ago, I decided to commit more and start part-time. I was always discovering something new every day, which made me really intrigued to learn more about the industry. I started full time in May 2020 as a Customer Service Specialist & Junior Underwriter, and then took my LLQP a bit after to get licensed. Now, I’m working as an Associate Advisor, and loving every minute of it!

What do you currently do in your role?

Currently, my goal is to help people build Space to Breathe by implementing insurance services that ensure financial security as we all know life doesn’t always go as planned. Whether it’s through life, critical illness, or disability insurance, I want to give people protection with a product that is best suited to their needs.

How does it feel working in a family business and being a part of the NextGen group?

If you asked me a couple of years ago if I thought I would ever be working with my family, my answer most likely would have been “not a chance”. Discovering how amazing the family work/life balance can be, I am so proud to be working alongside them and can’t imagine it any other way! I am constantly surrounded by support and encouragement, which goes a long way when starting a new career.

Being a part of the NextGen group is also important to me, as I want to continue the legacy my parents have created and uphold their vision and values, especially in creating environmental and social change. It helps that we’re a business that cares about continuity both for our own business and for our clients.

What do you like most about your job?

What I like most about my job is educating people on how insurance can be used as a tool when life does not go as planned. I have seen what the effects of death, disabilities, and illnesses can have on an individual or their family when they are not prepared for it, and it can have devastating effects. If I can help people in any way to avoid those financial hardships, then I have done my job.

I see you have an Instagram account focused on educating people on insurance, so that’s great of you to spread awareness on insurance beyond person-to-person. Now, what does “Space to Breathe” mean to you?

To me, Space to Breathe means taking away that worry we have in our heads of the dangling possibility of financial insecurity. Our greatest asset is ourselves and our ability to earn an income. If that ability was to be taken away but you’ve planned ahead by being insured, then that gives you less time for worrying and creates that space in your mind to just relax and breathe.

Well said! What activity helps you relieve stress?

One of the best things that help me relieve stress is going on walks (especially when it is raining) or any form of exercise. Been getting into spin classes lately, which have been great!

Even when it rains? You are a true Vancouverite! Here are some rapid-fire questions. Favourite holiday?

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be?

Hawaii.

What is your most-used emoji?

😆

You’re singing karaoke – what’s the first song you pick?

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
