Reflections of Cove 2018

Every year, when this time of year rolls around, I am amazed at the speed of time.

The last 12 months have been exciting and maybe even a little stressful. I won’t lie—change and progress requires that we adjust to a new normal and let go of old attitudes, processes, and habits. Sometimes (most of the time), this isn’t easy. If we don’t have an immediate reward of some kind that is worth the stress, we may need others to push us and support us when we decide to make a change. That’s where we come in—for each other on our team, for our clients, and for our partners.

Face it, we spend much of our life trying to create stability and insulate ourselves from change, so when change does happen, it is natural to feel stress. Some people call it good stress, but I see it simply as stress with the caveat that maybe the stress is worth it because of the intended outcome. We work in the world of stress, helping people make decisions—sometime difficult ones—and take action in their life to create stability for themselves, their families, and their businesses. We also help them make changes that run counter to normal traditional business practices that are in the best interest of all their stakeholders.

Affecting positive change and facilitating the process of setting big goals is how we get our greatest satisfaction.

If we’re doing our jobs accountably and in a transparent manner, we are able sustain our profitability to ensure our ability to grow and thrive through our own changes while helping others and adding value to their lives.

It has been just over a full year since we introduced our Impact Planning Services, and we’ve been amazed by the appetite in the business community to move on—changing their organizations to be better global citizens. I say global because planning to be a better business has far-reaching effects, which include our communities, customers, employees, and our planet. In order to be able to handle the number of companies that have signed onto our Impact Planning process, we’ll be hiring a new employee this year. I look forward to introducing our new team member soon.

This year, we brought Warren Campbell on board as a co-owner of Cove. Warren has been a friend and colleague for over 20 years, shares our values, and is a highly skilled advisor. Three years ago, he joined us in an advisor capacity; today he is an owner. Warren provides Cove with continuity over the longer term from an insurance advisory perspective.

Warren took on the position of Vice President, Planning and leads the ongoing development of our Right Way Path™ planning process and deliverables to clients and advisor partners outside of Cove. With his 20+ years of experience, supporting insurance advisors in the advance applications of insurance for continuity planning, Warren brings a depth of knowledge that reflects Cove’s commitment to a high level of technical expertise in addition to our values-based business model. Warren is a designated Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP), Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP).

We also saw our good friend Amir Jafari depart to take on new challenges. He made a significant contribution to Cove while he was here, but, in the spirit of our desire to be our best selves, we are always supportive of having our team members pursue their dreams, even if that means leaving Cove. We continue to be in touch with Amir and wish him all the best on his new adventure in the tech space.

Luciana continues to dazzle us with her art. She has created so many beautiful pieces of art again this year that finds their way into the homes of clients, associates, and her own global network of clients. Recently, she was invited to show her work in an art show in Madrid. We have an internationally acclaimed artist in our midst, and we love to support her in her work in any way we can. We are grateful to be able to see her work everyday when we come to the office with the many pieces that adorn our walls.

2018 Highlights In Brief

Cove was awarded Best for The World For Workers once again in 2018 by B Lab, the non-profit that certifies B Corps around the world. It is awarded to the top 10% of companies in the world based on assessment scores. We hope to score even higher this year in our triannual reassessment.

Bernie was heavily involved in the submission of new Benefit Company Legislation in BC, legislation that, when passed, will support companies that decide to be responsible corporate and community citizens. This involved meeting with the leaders of both the Greens and the NDP and received full support of the government. Although it passed 1st and 2nd readings in the legislature this spring, it is slated to be reintroduced, after some amendments, in Spring 2019 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd reading and final passing. For more information on this, please check out our Blog on our website.

Christie became a Super Activator in ShEO this year. SheEO is a global community of radically generous women transforming how we finance, support, and celebrate women-led ventures. The model brings together 500 women (called “activators”) in each cohort, who contribute $1100 each as an Act of Radical Generosity. The money is pooled together and loaned out at 0% interest to five women-led ventures selected by the activators. The loans are paid back over 5 years and then loaned out again, creating a perpetual fund that will pass on to our daughters, granddaughters, and nieces. Since launching in 2015, 3000 SheEO activators have collectively loaned out $3M in support of 32 ventures, creating a better world. The ventures have had a 100% loan repayment rate and have, on average, triple-digit revenue growth. ShEO has been an inspiring and fun adventure for Christie, and she is happy to share how others can get involved in this influential and positive initiative.

In May 2018, Cove became the first insurance advisory firm in Canada to become fully Commission Transparent. We committed to disclosing to our clients what we get paid on each of the insurance options we present, along with a comparison of commissions for all options that are available. We do not know of any other individual life insurance providers that provides this level of disclosure and transparency. We feel good about this initiative as it deals with the unspoken suspicions that most people have about insurance, making for a positive relationship.

Cove Impact 6 Pack workshops, in partnership with the Vancouver Economic Commission and the BDC, to help small- to medium-size companies explore B Corp certification, has been a big success. Kristy O’Leary, our head of Impact Planning at Cove, developed an extensive 6 half-day program that has received international acclaim for its effectiveness in delivering the planning process to a wider constituency than just big companies (it makes it accessible to smaller companies with limited budgets). We appreciate BDC’s continued and ongoing support through their sponsorship and partnership in the delivery of this extremely successful program. We look forward to rolling it out across the country in 2019.

Cove continues to support environmental charities through our affiliations with 1% For The Planet, Ecojustice, and Tides Canada. We have become the first Canadian corporate sponsor of Global 1% For The Planet Global Conference, which will be held in Portland, Oregon, this year. Christie and I attended the Global Conference in Boulder, Colorado, in April of this year and were inspired by the positive efforts being made to combat climate change. We continue to work with 1% to expand their membership in Canada by developing creative sponsorship programs to fit the Canadian landscape.

We are beyond pleased, and with hearts full of gratitude, to announce that Cove Continuity Advisors Inc. was recently awarded the Business of The Year award for 2018 by the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce! The whole process of being nominated, being interviewed, being chosen as a finalist, and having a film created about Cove was an amazing, fun, and engaging process for us. Winning the award was the icing on the cake. It reminds us that the place that we spend most of our waking hours needs to be a great place to work. It recognizes our past achievements and needs to be viewed as the beginning of what is yet to come. Reflecting on our journey that led us to where we are today, we are all so excited about the possibilities of what we can achieve in the years to come. And, of course, we did not win this award alone. A huge thanks to all our clients, partners, supporters, and friends that made this award possible. We share it with you. You can find our video on our website homepage at

It was a busy year. It was also a year in which Christie and I decided to explore somewhere other than Hawaii for our free time. In February, we spent two weeks in Costa Rica, which proved to be an amazing adventure. Through our B Corp community connections, we met Travis Bays, a co-owner of Bodhi Surf and Yoga, a company that provides week-long yoga and surf retreats in a small village on the far southwest coast of Costa Rica. It was idyllic. Our two weeks were filled with surfing, yoga, hiking, and getting to know the local community and its people. We loved it so much that we are booked to spend all of January there, surfing, doing yoga and exploring Corcovado Nation Park during a six-day trek along the Camino Del Oro trail with our friends, Travis and Pilar from Bodhi. I will be celebrating my 60th birthday in a jungle with 2% of the worlds bio-diversity making noise around me. We can’t wait.

In closing, on behalf of the Cove team, I would like to send you and your family best wishes for happiness during the holidays and always. May you be truly happy. Everyone here at Cove knows that we would not have a business without the customers that rely on us for insurance and planning services. We are honoured to serve you and continue to look for ways to provide services that are relevant and meaningful keeping in mind the following guiding principle:
