1% For the Planet works to increase funding to the environment by leading a network of businesses, non-profits, and individuals working together for a healthy planet. Launched in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, former owner of Blue Ribbon Flies, their network consists of thousands of member companies and non-profit partners in more than 40 countries.
Members pledge to donate 1% of their sales each year directly to approved non-profit partners. 1% For the Planet certifies all donations to independent non-profits. More than $200 million (USD) have been given through the 1% network of member companies to date.
Did you know that only 3% of philanthropy goes to environmental causes? Of that. only 5% comes from corporations. Here are some interesting stats we found on 1% For the Planet’s website:
- 93% of adults care about the environment and more than half of millennials care “a lot” about the environment
- 81% of millennials expect companies to show their commitment to CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility)
- A growing percentage of consumers (66% and climbing) are willing to pay more for sustainable brands
- Sales of consumer goods from brands with a demonstrated commitment to sustainability have grown more than 4% globally
