Cove’s Women’s Division Paving the Path for Females in the Insurance Industry

Cove’s Women’s Division Paving the Path for Females in the Insurance Industry

We’re proud of the advisors that make up our Women’s Division—Christie, Nikki, and Shanna. They’re not just any ordinary insurance advisors—they are extraordinary female insurance advisors intent on shaking up the insurance industry and giving more women voices in the insurance process. Read their interview below.

What is the Women’s Division at Cove?

Christie: Since the very beginning of when the insurance industry started, men always dominated this space. I spearheaded the Women’s Division at Cove so that women can feel comfortable talking about insurance and also buying insurance, as it has traditionally been the man’s decision on buying insurance.

Nikki: There’s also the entrepreneurial aspect to it. There are countless women who are small business owners or successful professionals, and always have to work harder to prove themselves. We want to stand by their side and be a symbol of female entrepreneurialism and drive.

Shanna: We really wanted to create a space where women can feel comfortable by being able to talk to another woman and have their needs and concerns understood. We’re here to talk about women’s issues from a women’s point of view, as opposed to the traditional man’s point of view.

What is your goal with the Women’s Division?

C: For me, it’s about attracting more female advisors to Cove. I have been the only female advisor for quite a while, but recently, we have two young, bright, outgoing, entrepreneurial female advisors joining Cove, and we now have more female advisors than male advisors in our company. And we’re intent on growing!

S: It’s about changing women’s view of insurance; that female clients can feel comfortable talking with us about issues—especially during underwriting—that specifically affect women, such as pregnancies, infertility, family, and more.

N: And it’s not just changing women’s view—it’s everybody’s view of insurance because it’s not just the stereotypical salesman selling you insurance anymore!

What kind of impact are you making with the Women’s Division so far?

S: Many of our female clients are truly grateful that they’re working with people they can trust. And we 100% stand by that—we want people to know that we are insurance advisors that put your interests and needs first over the sales and commissions.

C: We want to bring women into the insurance decision-making process right from the start. Cove’s vision is for all Canadians to own and value life insurance. The Women’s Division sets out to be inclusive and approachable so that ALL Canadians, whether they are women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, anyone, can comfortably own and value life insurance, and we have been doing just that.

N: Even just starting the dialogue about the importance of insurance to women has made a tremendous impact. When we reach out to females, discuss insurance with them, and share examples of how it has protected people’s lives and made a difference to them, that’s helping females be informed when it comes to insurance purchases and their role in the process.

Which female right now are you inspired by?

C: Teara Frase. She’s the first Indigenous woman to start an airline in Canada. She flies to and from Vancouver and Vancouver Island regularly. She started an all-female airline maintenance team, is fearless, and not afraid to take on challenges. During the pandemic, she took it upon herself to ship crates of goods to indigenous communities by using her airline, which is absolutely commendable.

S: Susan St Amand. She has been in the insurance industry for many years, and how she paved her career and the drive she has with her work is truly inspiring. It makes you want to go out there and do what you aspire to do!

N: My nursing friends most definitely inspire me. All of their hard work on the frontlines really shows the resilience, dedication, and care they put in their job day in day out, which I like to embody.

Where do you see the Women’s Division heading?

C: We’re heading just where it’s supposed to be going. As in, we’re doing what we do best—care for our clients, make sure we treat everyone inclusively, equally, and with the respect that we would want in return, and do a great job. If we do all of that, we have no doubt we’ll continue to shape the industry and also shape the way women perceive and engage with insurance.

S: For Nikki and I, since we’ve recently started, we also want to continue networking with other successful women in business. Growing this network helps everyone out, not just us.

N: Agreed. By doing what we’re doing, we hope to build a network of strong, confident women, who can find inspiration from others.
