Who are Ecojustice and 1% for the Planet? Learn About our Partners in the Clean Up Canada Campaign
Using our business as a force for good means connecting with amazing organizations, such as Ecojustice and 1% for the Planet. Thanks to them and many others we partner up with, we’re able to meaningfully make an impact in the world. We’re spotlighting Ecojustice and 1% for the Planet in this blog post – learn more about what they do and how our company works with them.
Using the Power of the Law to Protect our Environment
Ecojustice acts on the simple idea that effective laws can protect the planet and hold those in power to account. As Canada’s largest environmental law charity, they help people take governments and polluters to court, expose illegal practices, and shape new laws to meet the urgency of the climate and ecological crises. For more than 30 years, Ecojustice lawyers have represented Indigenous communities, grassroots activists, and everyday Canadians—free of charge. Named one of Charity Intelligence’s Top 100 charities in 2021, Ecojustice is proud to be 100 percent donor-funded and powered by a growing community of more than 177,000 supporters strong.
We make annual cash donations to Ecojustice to help fund its many initiatives. We allocate a portion of our pledged 1% for the Planet dollars (which you can learn more about below) to Ecojustice’s work in creating laws or enforcing existing laws that protect our environment. One of their latest projects, which is developing Corporate Climate Accountability legislation, is an effort to a greener future, and we’re thrilled to be supporting and promoting this project. The Global Network Inspiring Everyone to Take Action
The idea behind 1% for the Planet is simple: because companies profit from the resources they take from the earth, they should protect those resources by contributing a minimum of 1% of their topline revenue to protect the planet. Because this same principle can play to us as individuals, they have added individual memberships as well. Members’ commitment can be cash or an equivalent value in volunteer time. Since their beginning, they’ve certified more than $350 million in support of approved environmental non-profits.
Being a 1% for the Planet member has helped us connect with high-impact environmental non-profits, like Ecojustice, that align with our values. Our membership at 1% for the Planet has provided us with rewarding experiences through both the people we have met and the projects our team has participated in. 1% for the Planet certifies a member’s contributions through an annual certification process; thus, when you see the 1% for the Planet logo on a brand, you can be confident to know that the brand is committed to the environment.
We’re All Joining Forces
For the month of April, we’re raising money in partnership with Ecojustice and 1% for the Planet to support Ecojustice’s initiative to create corporate climate accountability legislation in Canada. The campaign, called Clean Up Canada, is an awareness campaign that aims to highlight the climate harm brought on by corporations and the need to hold our corporations in Canada accountable for their climate action.
